Fresh Shrimp Technology

NaturalShrimp has spent many years developing and commercializing a technology that will reliably produce a weekly crop of premium quality shrimp using a high degree of automation within an indoor environment. This proprietary patented production method minimizes labor costs, is completely eco-friendly and can produce fresh, gourmet grade shrimp in a high-density environment on a commercial level anywhere in the world. The comprehensiveness, versatility and reliability of our control systems set us apart and make us the technology leader of the shrimp industry.

For many years, NaturalShrimp worked with “BioFloc Technology” in its commercialization efforts in shrimp aquaculture. It promised a high-density, closed system and other competitors still use this system. However, major problems occur in large-scale commercialization.

Historically, efforts to raise shrimp in a high-density, closed system at the commercial level have met with either modest success or outright failure through “BioFloc Technology”. Infectious agents such as parasites, bacteria and viruses are the most damaging and most difficult to control. Bacterial infection can in some cases be combated through the use of antibiotics (although not always), and in general the use of antibiotics is considered undesirable and counter to “green” cultivation practices. Viruses can be even worse in that they are immune to antibiotics, and once introduced to shrimp population viruses can wipe out entire farms and shrimp populations, even with intense probiotic applications.

Starting in 2014, NaturalShrimp switched to “Vibrio Suppression Technology”, a new and innovative system developed and patented jointly by NaturalShrimp and F&T Water Solutions that utilizes Electrocoagulation (EC) technology as part of the filtration loop.

EC, the passing of electric current through water, has proven very effective in the removal of contaminants from water. EC systems have been in existence for many years using a variety of anode and cathode geometries, including plates, balls, fluidized bed spheres, wire mesh, rods and tubes. In the past few decades it has been used for the treatment of water containing food and beverage wastes, oil and natural gas wastes, dyes, suspended solids, chemical and mechanical polishing waste, organic matter from landfill leachates, defluorination of water, synthetic detergent effluents, mine wastes and heavy metal-containing solution. EC has become one of the affordable wastewater treatment processes around the world by reducing electricity consumption and miniaturization of the needed power supplies.

NaturalShrimp has taken the EC technology and has developed a custom design specifically tailored for the aquaculture industry.

EC combined with mechanical filtration components in a closed Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) accomplishes the following:

  • It controls the level of bacteria within the system
  • It removes ammonia from the system and greatly reduces nitrate buildup
  • It produces an anti-oxidative water chemistry beneficial to the health of the shrimp

Our EC reactor is made up of an electrolytic cell with multiple anodes and cathodes. The standard EC system essentially consists of the reaction chamber and cells, power supply, control panel, pumps and electrical connectors all mounted on a skid.

Vibrio Suppression Technology simplifies the system design by replacing the need for biofilters and “BioFloc.” Control of the water chemistry is now electronic rather than relying on populations of uncontrollable bacteria. Vibrio Suppression Technology creates higher sustainable densities, consistent production, improved growth and survival rates and improved food conversion without the use of antibiotics, probiotics or unhealthy anti-microbial chemicals. Vibrio Suppression Technology helps to exclude and suppress harmful organisms that usually destroy “BioFloc” and other enclosed technologies.
